Project Engineer – Metallurgy

Job Title: Project Engineer – Metallurgy

Main Function:

This position has the following responsibilities: Perform inspections on new and existing products to evaluate, document, and report root causes of failure. Support purchasing, supplier quality, and plant initiatives to reduce costs and improve product quality. Serve as liaison between materials testing and FEA.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide timely and accurate material and metallurgical related responses to internal customer requests for product and failure investigations.
  • Serve as interface between FEA/design groups and materials testing to ensure that accurate and current materials property data sets are being controlled and utilized.
  • Assist in the execution of process modeling efforts.
  • Support purchasing and supplier quality efforts to reduce costs and ensure material specifications are being achieved.
  • Support manufacturing operations by serving on 8-D, CI, and process/quality review teams (Eight Disciplines and Continuous Integration).
  • Maintain work instructions for performing routine metallurgical lab evaluations.
  • Assist in the development and control of specifications for incoming raw materials.
  • Support research efforts focused on materials, materials coatings, and processing of materials.


Education, Training & Work Experience Requirements:

  • BS in Engineering required, degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Metallurgy preferred.
  • Two years of experience in an industrial setting preferred.
  • Experience with metallurgical lab equipment preferred (SEM, Mechanical Testing, Metallography, etc.).
  • Knowledge of physical and mechanical metallurgy of aluminum is desirable.
  • Experience with non-destructive testing (Ultrasonic, Eddy Current) is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience with quality systems preferred.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques and metal forming operations.
  • Familiarity with fatigue testing, failure analysis, welding/joining and corrosion.
  • Proven proficiency with Microsoft applications.
  • Fluency in Spanish or Mandarin desirable.
